Heard on IRC this morning:

"God created war so that americans can learn geography."

daily / burnies

I forgot what I was going to blog. Just as I was about to start, I got a phone call, which meant I had to go and fix someone's DSL router on-site. Oh well.

Got  a sunburn at 11am. Went for the 40-lap swim and got shiny red shoulders. Ugh. If you have any spare ozone, Australia will gladly take donations.

Lunch is bubble & queak. Mash, peas, corn and tuna.

Sorry to sound like a fanboy, but Beagle 0.2.0 rocks. It's far faster than previous versions and the new search tool looks great. Good work, guys! :-)

daily / foss kills

I was going through my news feeds this morning and found the following paragraph staring back at me from NewsForge.

"Military, weapons, and national defense are certainly not synonymous with open source software, but developers and companies that provide Linux and other open source software for such applications indicate the ideals of open source communities are not contrary to its use in defense."

http://software.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=06/01/18/1750230

Disregard for a moment the rest of the article. I suppose the GPL doesn't preclude it, but I'd be mortified if my software was used to more efficiently kill people. Perhaps there should be a 'No military applications' clause we could tack on to some GNU licenses.

Seeing as GPLv3 is being developed, perhaps such a module would be a good idea.

I'm sure there are people who think excluding military applications flies in the face of the true FOSS ideals, but I think there's a limit to what sort of practices you should ignore in order to maintain adherence to a 'higher good'.

Free software isn't a higher good than a human life.
