daily / peeetrolll?

On the new last night there were (again) a bunch of reports about politicians and various other appendages demanding cheaper fuel. (The petrol prices here have been going up, so that they're now at least half of what fuel costs in Europe)

DRIVE A NON-V8 CAR! TAKE A BUS! TAKE A TRAIN! GET A BIKE!

I just really needed to get that off my chest.

daily / laptop

After futzing around with my laptop for a while yesterday afternoon, I decided it was time for an OS shuffle. The machine previously had a 30GB Windows XP install and 10GB Ubuntu Dapper partition.

After some serious housecleaning on the Windows side (removed pretty much all non-FOSS software, as I never use it anyway) and playing with parted, it now has a 12GB XP installation.

The reason Windows gets to stay is that our business uses a piece of proprietary software called Zingthing which, although written in Java, uses ActiveX objects and other windows-specific hacks to speak to multiple USB keyboards. *arrrgh*

The remaining disk space is now divided between OpenBSD 3.9 (2GB), Fedora Core 5 (4GB), Ubuntu Dapper (10GB) and swap (1GB).

More boot menu choices than you can shake a stick at!

This is the first time (ever) I've run Fedora/Redhat and first impression is that the update manager (specifically, dependency calculation) is slooooow. Argh.

It's got a shiny theme (KatteKrab saw it on Russell Cokers laptop at the LUV meet and decided it looked nice) which is blue with bubbles. The logo pretty much reminds me of Macromedia flash, to be honest.

Unlike Ubuntu, but like MacOS X, it has a simple firewall dialog. (Select standard services, add ports to open). Useful!

I'm sure firestarter is supposed to do the same, but it invariably makes my desktop machine fall off the lan until I angrily uninstall it and set up iptables rules by hand <heh>.

daily / wedding

Last week KatteKrab (this is an old dutch word, meaning "she of the cloven finger") and I celebrated our 10th (9th) wedding anniversary. The number is under some dispute because we had a handfasting a year and a day before the "official" wedding.

To mark the occasion, we went to a new-ish french restaurant in North Mel8ourne called Libertine. I can heartily recommend it, food, wine and service were fantastic!

Yarra Trams tram #192 must die.

It has a wheel with a flat side, which makes an awful amount of noise as it comes zooming downhill along Abbotsford Street.

Donations of explosives are welcome.
