work / new server

After some annoying down-time at our hosting provider due to DDoS attacks against their netblock, I've now leased a Linode to use as backup MX and DNS server.

This will ensure that even if websites are unreachable, Mail will still arrive and be held in the queue, and because DNS will work, so will SPF.

On a related note, I've been looking into running Xen or UML at home for a while. (Linode use uml). When afforementioned new server turns up, it will be nicely powered to handle a shole slew of virtual machines.

work / xmlrpc

The amount of XMLRPC requests to the various virtual hosts is reaching insane levels. I've installed apache's mod-security to just filter them out. Lets see how we go...

work / network

Well, a week after getting back online the networking is sorted.

After a temporary setup involving a few kilometres of cable salad, machines now have their own power boards and are tucked away under a table, which houses the printers.

HackergotchiThe old dlink modem/router now lives in the lounge room and provides connectivity to the office via a peer to peer WiFi link with one of the linux boxes. This means I can once again use a decent firewall, traffic shaping and a transparent proxy. Joy :-)

Actual WiFi is provided by a stand-alone access point, which now runs WPA (seeing as Apple have wrecked 64bit WEP in OSX Tiger). I have wpa_supplicant working under Linux now, so it's much of a muchness.

The only things really left to do now are to replace the dlink with a decent ADSL2+ box once Internode get their shit together and to replace the Linux servers with a shiny new Shuttle AMD64 machine with 2x400GB of disk.
